I've seen a couple of stuff posted on DA that got some negative comments, and there's suddenly a huge flame going on on the comments section
I'm actually a bit disappointed at the 'flamers' - people who diss out the negative comment on the get-go. What bothers me the most are comments like: "If you don't like the stuff, don't look at it and give negative comments.", or "If you don't like it, why are you looking at it?", or "This stuff is perfect and you're an idiot. F*** off!", or "You're a hypocrite, you said you don't like it but you're looking at it." and so on. Yeah, not helping. I appreciate the effort to defend the art/artist, but there are better ways to do it, like inviting them to see it from a different perspective. I'm not very artistically literate myself - I don't understand the Catholic church's view on nude arts; they have a lot of it in the Sistine Chapel (I read Michaelangelo was a bit sarcastic at the time
).
The most I've seen is on the "Artistic Nude" category. Sure, nude arts are meant to celebrate the beauty of the human body. But I must admit, my opinion on the stuff is that it HAS to be artistic, not just some gratuitous random shot of genitals or sexual fetishes. For me, poorly done shots of the crotch area feel like they lack the appreciation of the grace and beauty of the human body, and probably better classified as pornography. I'm also a bit disturbed with stuffs that shows females being bound, and in submissive positions/situations - Recently, I read a couple articles on human trafficking
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28161210/,
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27098993/… these kinds of images relate to how these poor girls and women are treated, which is very ... disgusting (sorry, I can't find a better word to express how much I hate this inhuman business - worse, some of the traffickers are women). There are some other stuffs I find uninspiring, but I'm not going to talk about it right now.
I may be an idiot, but sometimes I want to express my disappointment to those kinds of stuff on DA and I've been restraining myself just not to cause 'flames'. But I understand that art is subjective (did I read somewhere that it's supposed to be 'objective'??) - beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and one man's garbage may be another man's treasure. I don't want people to flame me when I give negative comments; I want them to prove me wrong, that there are other ways to appreciate it, and educate me to understand art better. But I also want the artists (and other viewers) to understand that I'm seeing it from a different perspective, not that I have something personal against the artist. And I hope we can learn from each other.
So, I want to encourage artists to embrace negative comments and be responsible with your arts. I admit, when I get negative comments sometimes it felt hard and bitter. And it's tempting to respond as bitter as the comments. But try to understand that often times that their view is valid, although we might not agree with them. Stand up for your arts, but don't expect only happy comments, be open to criticism and improve from it - you do realize that when you post your stuff don't you? Better yet, if you realize your stuff will invoke controversy, and you don't want negative comments, DA has an option to enable/disable comments. COOL!
I want to try something radical this new year: taking negative comments with a grain of salt. But pardon me if I slipped; keep in mind that I'm a fool. You're welcome to join in if you like.
Happy New Year 2009!
